The Empty Canal

Description

Behold part of The Farmington Canal!  Built between 1825 and 1835, this canal stretched from Northampton Massachusetts to the port of New Haven Connecticut.  Unlike some canals, in other parts of the world, this canal was dug right into dirt, not rock, and was never reinforced with concrete or anything hard.

Looking at it now, you'd never be able to tell that this ever was a canal in some sections.  While some sections still have water in them, run through cities and towns in public places, and are maintained in part, others are out in the middle of the woods, bone dry, have had the dirt fill it back up, and have trees, shrubs, and other plants growing every which way.  The section in this picture is mostly clear due to certain types of off road vehicles using it as a 'trail' when the weather is nice.
